David: God's own heart Chapter 5 King Saul - Perfect in Stature and Exceedingly Handsome
Perfect in Stature and Exceedingly Handsome1 Samuel 9:2
When God chose Saul as Israel’s first king,He didn’t leave the details to chance. He could have chosen someone plain or even physically unimpressive—but He didn’t.Instead, God presented Saul as a man of striking appearance: tall, strong, &exceedingly handsome.Bible tells us that “there was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people."Saul’s stature alone would draw the eyes of an entire nation.
Even Samuel was immediately impressed.Saul’s outward presence made a powerful first impression, uniting the tribes of Israel under one man without the need for debate or vote. God,who looks into the heart, still chose to present Saul in a way that was undeniably attractive to the people—removing hesitation, silencing objections, &rallying Israel behind him with one look.
Ask yourself: who is your ideal man?Would Saul fit the description? For once, bible shows us a leader chosen by God who also happened to possess all the physical qualities people admire. Saul looked the part that mattered in this moment.God used Saul’s appearance to gain Israel’s immediate “yes.”No protests. No delay. The people were ready to follow.
And follow they did.Remarkably, we read of no complaints from the Israelites about Saul—quite the contrast to their usual grumbling. They accepted God’s chosen man without the need for political discourse or public opinion. No votes were cast. No debates held. God had spoken, and the people responded.
Yet,as impressive as Saul was outwardly, his reign would not be sustained by looks alone. His success would depend on obedience to God's commands and submission to the prophet Samuel’s instructions. As his story unfolds, we begin to see his vulnerabilities—his impatience, pride,& tendency to follow instinct over divine instruction. He would later try to justify his disobedience, only to be rebuked by Samuel.
Ultimately, Saul’s physical attractiveness could not secure God's lasting favor.God may have used his appearance to unite the people, but it was always the heart He was after.
In the end, character wins not physical beauty
