David: God's own heart Chapter 5 Jonathan - Love of Women Versus Love of a True Friend
Love of Women Versus Love of a True Friend
As I delve deeper into the story of Jonathan and David, I find myself approaching the complex topic of homosexuality and the unique nature of their love.
David was known for his many romantic relationships with women. Therefore, he understood the difference between the love of a woman who genuinely cares for him and the sacrificial love of a man willing to surrender his life and future for David's destiny.
Who, in this world, would willingly surrender a throne to his own rival? Who would obey God’s command to relinquish the crown, even after being chosen, simply because God had rejected him?
Very few could bear such a burden without walking through the dark valley of pain — the agony of surrendering entitlements, forsaking one's future, and ultimately giving up one's life for another whom God had anointed.
Jonathan did not give up his claim to the throne easily, nor was he a traitor to his father. Instead, he recognized God's authority, understood the true meaning of friendship, and chose to preserve his father's remaining faith before God, who had already been dishonored by Saul’s actions. In response to Jonathan's loyalty, God preserved a descendant of Saul through David’s lineage and blessed Jonathan's last living descendant son restoring all their fortunes and lived beside David all his life.
In the name of empires and bloody wars Jonathan showed a rare virtue that God and David never forget. He was prophetic in his support of David and played a critical role in God’s plan to establish David’s kingship. Jonathan possessed the kind of love God required to secure David’s throne. Everything God intended from Saul's household was fulfilled through Jonathan's sacrificial friendship. By protecting David, keeping him safe, and ensuring no harm came to him during his lifetime, Jonathan demonstrated a love that surpasses what any woman could offer.
Loving and preserving an enemy is nearly impossible, but Jonathan achieved it. He stands as God's champion in the realm of friendship, exemplifying a love that exceeds even the deepest romantic love.
