David: God's own heart Chapter 3 King Saul - Reluctance to lead
Reluctance to lead
The Israelites had asked God for a king to lead them, like other nations. Although this request was a rejection of God's direct rule (see 1 Samuel 8), God granted it and chose Saul to be the first king of Israel. Before this public selection, Saul had already been privately anointed by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1). The verses here describe the moment of public confirmation.
> "When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes... Finally Saul son of Kish was taken."
This describes a process of casting lots—a traditional, God-ordained method used to discern His will (similar to drawing straws or rolling dice, but guided by divine intervention). The process narrows from tribe (Benjamin), to clan (Matri), to individual (Saul). This ceremonial narrowing reinforces that Saul’s selection wasn’t a human decision but a divine appointment.
> "But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. So they inquired further of the Lord... 'He has hidden himself among the supplies.'"
This is a moment of dramatic irony and deep symbolism. Saul, though chosen by God, is hiding—perhaps out of fear, insecurity, humility, or reluctance. It shows that while he may have had the physical stature of a king (see 1 Samuel 9:2), his heart was hesitant, not fully confident in the role God had assigned him.
We can then conclude the following:
👉God's Sovereignty – Even in human systems (casting lots), God's will prevails.
👉Human Weakness – Saul’s hiding reveals that being chosen doesn't remove fear or inadequacy. It shows how God's choices often involve flawed individuals.
👉Reluctance to Lead – Saul’s behavior foreshadows his later struggles with obedience and confidence as king.
👉Transparency with God – The people inquire of the Lord, and God responds directly, showing His willingness to guide when asked.
Lord, thank You that You see me even when I hide. Thank You for calling me, not because I’m perfect, but because You have a plan for me. Give me the courage to step forward and walk in Your purpose for my life Help me to trust that if You’ve called me, You will strengthen me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
