David: God's own heart Chapter 2 Jonathan - Saving by Many or by Few

Saving by Many or by Few

Nothing can limit God in saving, whether by many or by few.

When Jonathan said this, I am reminded of his ancestor Joshua. Joshua climbed a double wall and saw what appeared to be giants occupying the Promised Land. Yet he reported back to Moses, "What is impossible with men is possible with God," because he understood that God is near and faithful, never breaking His promise to save those who trust in His ways.

A similar scenario occurred at a different time. Jonathan faced a situation that seemed impossible to man. The Philistines were physically strong and towering in stature. Yet Jonathan had no doubts or hesitation about whether God would intervene. He didn’t focus on the enemy’s size and strength; instead, he fixed his eyes on who was within him. God was his constant companion—his ever-present shadow, the faithful God who never leaves and follows him everywhere he goes. This reveals Jonathan’s character and his intimate relationship with God. He was God’s sword, the defender of David’s future throne, almost reflecting God’s own person and His covenant friendship with David.

This is truly wonderful: a faithful God who follows as you lead. That was Jonathan's perspective. He believed God was present in every step he took. This was neither unrealistic nor egotistical—it was absolute faith. Jonathan knew that God would never abandon him to die. The same faith was demonstrated by Joshua, who wielded God’s sword offensively, defeating their enemies through God’s power.

Jonathan showed unwavering faith, fully assured that God was near, not distant or merely trailing behind. His sword represented God’s victory; his life was an extension of God’s will. Without envy or jealousy, he embodied selflessness—pure love—laying down his life for his brother. Jesus spoke of such love in His teachings and parables. Jonathan is a perfect example of this virtue. He lived it, even though his story is not often emphasized. I want to honor his name here. His life accomplished more than many recognize. He was beloved by God and praised by David, the king after God’s own heart.
